NORTHERN WESTCHESTER HOSPITAL ADDS A NEW LEVEL OF CARE TO ITS CANCER TREATMENT AND WELLNESS CENTER
Event Dedicates Breast Institute, Opens Doors to Women's Imaging Center and the Laurie Bass Sklaver Women's Infusion Center
(Oct. 22, 2008) Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) today opened the doors to a 10,000 square foot addition of its Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center, bringing a whole new level of state-of -the art cancer care in one place to northern Westchester. Highlights of the new level of the facility include a Women's Imaging Center and the Laurie Bass Sklaver Women's Infusion Center.
The event also celebrated the recent opening of the hospital's Breast Institute, which offers a specialized team of professionals dedicated to diagnosing, treating and managing breast cancer in a caring and comfortable setting, giving the patient and her family the ability to concentrate on recovery.
The Women's Imaging Center features the latest technology in equipment for detecting breast cancer, including digital mammography, digital stereotactic biopsy, dedicated breast ultrasound as well as the first General Electric HDx MRI system in the Westchester area. The system offers VIBRANT breast imaging as well as other breast specific applications, such as computer-assisted diagnostics (CAD) to aid in the detection of breast cancer.
The Infusion Center has been named in the memory of Laurie Bass Sklaver, a resident of Chappaqua, who died in 2004 after a long, heroic battle with breast cancer. Dr. David Miller, Chief of Anesthesiology, led the efforts to name the center, which offers patients space for a companion, natural light, a personal television, and a choice of interaction with other patients or privacy.
The new first floor of the Cancer Treatment Center is contiguous to the first floor of the hospital and also houses oncologist offices and support group space. The original ground floor, which opened in April, 2005 has treatment rooms for sophisticated radiation therapy, such as gamma knife for stereotactic radiosurgery and the Trilogy linear accelerator; and a healing garden, which is being dedicated today. The American Cancer Society Patient Navigator program also provides services here.
The new space emphasizes Northern Westchester Hospital's dedication, as a member of the Planetree organization, to patient-centered care in a healing environment.
