Northern Westchester Hospital Recognized as First Clean Air NY Champion in the Region
Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) has signed on to be a "Champion" through the New York Department of Transportation's Clean Air NY initiative. Clean Air NY is a collaboration of organizations and individuals in the metro New York area who are taking actions to improve air quality and combat ozone pollution-a threat that greatly increases risk of respiratory disease.
NWH was named a Champion of the Clean Air NY initiative because of its numerous programs that demonstrate a proven commitment to action against poor air quality. The Hospital works with MetroPool to implement Nuride, a ride share network, and created the "Perfect 20/20 Commute" Campaign, an initiative to increase participation in the ride sharing program. NWH offered incentives, provided information and hosted outreach events for employees, resulting in over 200 employee participants in the NuRide program.
Since 1980, MetroPool, Inc., a not-for-profit organization which serves the New York State and Connecticut Departments of Transportation, has provided employers and commuters with free services to encourage a variety of transportation options, including car and vanpooling.
Other NWH programs include a $100 incentive for employees to walk to work, a guaranteed ride home for carpoolers and transit riders, and on-site parking for those who carpool to work.
"Doing our part to improve air quality is something we take very seriously," said Kerry Flynn Barrett, Vice President of Human Resources at Northern Westchester Hospital. "We are pleased to be recognized by the New York Department of Transportation's Clear Air NY program for our efforts and initiatives. We are continuously looking for new ways to encourage our employees to utilize different commuting options."
Clean Air NY is sponsored by the New York State Department of Transportation. To help make New York's air quality cleaner and healthier, the program encourages people to make simple, everyday travel choices that can make a difference-including combining errands into one trip, utilizing mass transit, and carpooling.
